Sitia Airport

The Sitia Airport, also known as “Vitsentzos Kornaros Airport,” is one of Crete's three main air gateways, albeit smaller than the Heraklion and Chania airports. Located roughly 1.5 kilometers northwest of Sitia on the island's eastern side, the airport primarily serves domestic flights, with some international routes available during peak tourist seasons. It offers a convenient entry point for travelers eager to explore the more remote and untouched areas of Crete.

History and Development of Sitia Airport

Sitia Airport began operations in the 1980s, focusing mainly on domestic flights. The airport’s gradual development culminated in 2016 with the renovation and expansion of the terminal, allowing it to accommodate a greater number of passengers and flights. While it remains smaller than Crete's other airports, its significance for the tourism industry in eastern Crete is substantial, providing direct access to some of the island’s most breathtaking and secluded locations.

Services and Facilities at Sitia Airport

Though smaller in scale, Sitia Airport features a modern terminal that covers the basic needs of travelers, offering a pleasant and comfortable experience. Here’s a rundown of its amenities:

  1. Shops and Dining: Local product and souvenir shops operate within the airport, as well as a café offering snacks, drinks, and quick meals. This is an excellent opportunity for travelers to try traditional products or purchase mementos before leaving Crete.
  2. Car Rental Services: Several car rental agencies have offices at the airport, making it convenient for travelers wanting to explore the region by car. Renting a car is especially useful given the limited public transport options in eastern Crete.
  3. Wi-Fi and Charging Stations: Visitors can access the airport’s free Wi-Fi and use the charging stations to keep their devices operational.
  4. Accessibility: The airport is accessible for travelers with disabilities, offering facilities and infrastructure that ease mobility and stay.

Transport Options from Sitia Airport

Eastern Crete offers fewer transportation options than the western and central parts of the island. However, there are several solutions available for transferring from Sitia Airport to various destinations.

  1. Taxis from the Airport

Taxis are the easiest and most direct way to reach your destination from the airport. Taxis are usually available outside the terminal and operate 24/7.

  • Advantages: Comfort and speed, especially if you have a lot of luggage or arrive late at night. Taxis can take you directly to your destination without the need to transfer between vehicles.
  1. Car Rental

Renting a car is arguably the best option for those interested in exploring eastern Crete. Travelers can rent a vehicle directly from Sitia Airport, enjoying the flexibility and independence that driving on the island offers.

  • Advantages: Renting a car makes it easy to reach remote beaches and charming villages, like Vai with its iconic palm forest and the secluded Koufonisi area, which are challenging to access by public transport.
  • Disadvantages: Roads in some parts of eastern Crete may be narrow and rugged, demanding cautious driving and some driving experience. Additionally, extra costs for fuel and parking may apply.
  1. KTEL Buses

Public transportation via KTEL buses is an affordable option, though service is limited, and not all areas are served with the same frequency.

  • Advantages: Buses are the most economical way to get around, with tickets from Sitia Airport to Sitia town costing only a few euros.
  • Disadvantages: Bus schedules can be infrequent, requiring potentially long waits, especially outside of the tourist season. Additionally, public transportation does not directly serve all popular beaches and villages, limiting direct access to some areas.
  1. Private Transfer Services and Mini Buses

Private transfer services, including mini buses, are an excellent option for families or groups traveling together. These services provide comfort, luggage space, and the flexibility to make stops along the way.

  • Advantages: Drivers can tailor the route to meet the group’s specific needs, while private service ensures a comfortable and quick experience.
